South Sumatera contemplates electricity privatization

Kompas reports that the South Sumatera provincial government is thinking about privatizing its electricity generation due to the inability of the government owned electric company PLN to meet the province’s electricity needs.

Recently elected South Sumatera Governor, Alex Noerdin, said that privatizing electricity supply could help fulfill the province’s energy needs and support infrastructure development. He also said that the idea had been proposed, but necessary approval from PLN hasn’t been obtained.

The governor’s idea was warmly welcomed by local housing developers as it could help them finalize housing projects in some areas of the province that had to be suspended due to lack of electricity grids.
