Less money needed to fill up your gas tank

Good news to Jakarta commuters: leaded gasoline price is down by 500 rups.

From Kompas Daily:

The government decides to lower the per liter price of "premium" (leaded) fuel, one of the three kinds of subsidized motor fuels, from Rp6,000 currently to Rp5,500. The new price will come into effect as of 1 December 2008. Current prices for diesel fuel and kerosene will remain.

Another thing the government announced is that they will be revising subsidized prices each month according to global market prices.

I usually fill up twice a week, costing about Rp200 thousand each time. The new price then will save me about Rp30 thousand a week or Rp120 thousand a month.

That might not seem much, but with about 3,375,000 people regularly driving their own car throughout Indonesia (this number according to Roy Morgan Research), that actually works out to be about Rp450 billion freed up per month or Rp5.4 trillion each year.
